Why Plant Based?

This post will definitely be controversial, but is that a reason not to write it? It’s time that the word is spread by holistic coaches about the harsh truth about what we are eating. This is what I believe in.

Diet and lifestyle ALONE can reverse and/or prevent the top diseases that are killing us. What we eat is either the greatest form of medicine or the greatest form of poison. We are living in a time when profit is motive. If you could eat whatever you wanted and just take a pill at the end of the day, no worries right? Wrong! Prescription drugs don’t cure diseases, they mask the symptoms. They themselves have side effects which then more prescription drugs need to be taken. BIG PROFIT!

I’m not saying you shouldn’t take your medication, but what if you could prevent going on medication in the first place? If you could eat a certain way that has been shown by Dr. Ornish and his colleagues to both reverse and prevent heart disease, wouldn’t you want to eat that way?

I believe we are on the verge of change. People don’t want to feel sick anymore, people are tired of taking medication after medication. In 1903, Thomas Edison said ” the doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will instruct his patient in the care of the human frame in diet and and in the cause and prevention of diseases”. There is one diet that is the diet of all diets, that is healthy for both brain and heart.

A plant based diet? Consuming more whole plant foods and eliminated or avoiding animal products and packaged foods. Here are some of the reason why a plant based diet could just be your answer:

For the most basic reasoning, a whole foods plant based diet is filled with vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals. Plant based diets are anti-inflammatory and filled with antioxidants. It is low in “bad” fats, reduces LDL cholesterol and contains tons of fiber! Eating a whole foods plant based diet (WHPBD – we’ll call it) is naturally detoxifying, promotes weight loss, balances blood sugar, improves energy and is very hydrating!

Another reason is the environment, a way to protect Earth.

  1. Livestock production is responsible for up to 51% of greenhouse gas emissions, according to Worldwatch Institute.
  2. Water conservation. To produce 1 gallon of milk it takes 1000 gallons of water. For one pound of beef, 2500 gallons. That is a lot of water.
  3. Raising animals for livestock accounts for up to 45% of land on Earth. 1-2 acres of rainforest are cleared every second for livestock.
  4. In the US 60% of corn and 47% of soybeans are used to feed livestock. These foods and grains can feed people instead.
  5. Livestock produces 116,000 lbs of waste per second. I’m talking feces which then runs off into drinking water in some places. Their manure produces ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, particulate matter, endotoxins, carbon dioxide and methane.

Did you know that every single day on a WFPBD you save 1,100 or more of water, 45 pounds of grain, 30 sq ft. of forest, 20 lbs CO2 equivalent and the life of an animal. Imagine what you save in a few months, in a few years, in your lifetime?

A few other reasons:

80% of antibiotics sold in the US is used on livestock and 6 million animals are slaughtered per hour for food.

And the whole protein debacle? It’s a non-issue. All plants have protein. The worry with WFPBD is how many calories are being consumed. A WFPBD is comprised of high nutrient-dense foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts/seeds and whole grains. It is not comprised of processed and packaged food. How could you go wrong? If calorie consumption is sufficient and balanced then protein is not something to worry about. Wouldn’t you like to not have to count calories? The real issue is that people who eat the Standard American Diet are not getting even close to the sufficient amounts of fiber needed daily.

Many people are actually consuming too much protein and from all the wrong places, like red meats and other animal products. When meat is cooked at high temperatures they produce carcinogenic compounds called heterocyclic amines. Animals are often given hormones to help speed their growth which then disrupts our natural hormone balance.

The dairy industry is a whole other issue. But for some fast info, the human body is not designed to digest cow’s milk. In fact, 75% of the world’s population is lactose intolerant. We are designed to digest milk from our mothers. We are the only species on the plant that drinks milk into adulthood – from another species! Dairy intake has been implicated in ear infections, constipation and acid reflux in children. Isn’t it interesting that the places who have the highest consumption of dairy also have the highest rates of fractures, MS and osteoporosis? Also, the FDA allows 750 million pus cells in every litre of milk. Isn’t that gross?

In the end, we only have one life to live, and we should do everything in our power to make sure we live a long healthy, fulfilling life.
